According to Hesiod, Ioannina basin was a very rich and fertile region,
called Ellopia. The residents of Ellopia belonged to
a Doric race of Thesprotians, who lived in the plain
of Ioannina in ancient Ellopia and in Homer’s Iliad they
are referred to as a priestly and prophetic race.
This is asserted later by Aristotle, who also supported
that the cradle of Greece was the region
next to Dodona and Acheloos, namely ancient Ellopia..
The residents of Ellopia had a penchant for divination
and as they wanted to be constantly in touch with the divine energy,
they used to sleep on the ground. At that time Dodona
started being used as a place of worship,
where initially the Great Goddess was worshipped,
deity of land fertility and welfare,
later replaced by the worship of Dodoneos Dias.
